6 Things I do in August:

(That make me feel like a genius when the colder weather arrives)

  1. Go through last year’s gear! Sort through last year’s winter gear and weed out anything that is worn out or too small. I’ve found that the best times to buy new gear is in the late summer or early fall! It’s also a good time to go through fall & winter clothes and see if anything needs replacing or tossing.

  2. Time for a tune up! Schedule a maintenance tune-up for your furnace! You don’t want to wait until it’s time to turn on the furnace to discover that there’s a problem! Also, booking ahead of time means you won’t have to scramble to find an opening in your preferred company’s schedule!

  3. Check the school year calendar! Listen, there will always be random days during the school year that pop up and you'll feel blindsided. Get ahead of that by going through the entire school year calendar and adding any non-school days to your calendar. No more surprise days! Let’s save those for when your kid starts puking in the middle of the night in February.

  4. Get your shots! Schedule your yearly vaccinations (for you and the kids!) now…so you’re not panic-booking an appointment in October. COVID is still a thing and the flu comes out with a different flavor every year. Most vaccines do not prevent illness, but they can definitely lessen the effects of them when you do get it.

  5. Do some deep cleaning. You’ve heard of Spring Cleaning? Get ready for her cousin, Fall Cleaning! Wash your walls, clean your baseboards, move furniture & appliances to clean underneath, clean your air conditioner, vacuum your mattress, clean out the refrigerator, scrub your oven, power wash your garbage can, and so much more!

  6. Carve out time on your calendar now to do fun fall things that you have wanted to do but haven’t made the time for in years past. This is Twin Cities specific…but I’m talking corn mazes, monarch butterflies, apple picking, pumpkin patches, fall festivals (in Stillwater, St. Louis Park, and Minneapolis and, football games, scenic fall drives, or a cool hike or two!
